Game of Spoilers: Adapted Works and Fan Consumption Disputes in Brazil

Mayka Castellano, Melina Meimaridis, Marcelo Alves dos Santos Junior

2017

The paper examines spoilers through a case study of 207 tweets generated from conversations on Twitter on June 14, 2015, concerning a specific episode of Game of Thrones. The authors argue that a key variable in conditioning fans’ reactions to spoilers lies in the difference between original screenplays and adapted works from other media narratives. Results show two major conflicts: one between different perspectives on the production and circulation of spoilers, and another between fans who read the books and those who only watch the show.
